Sunday morning concerts with aperitif
The series starts on March 14 at the Chiesa di San Giuseppe, with a recital by the Spanish violin virtuoso Joaquin Palomares, regarded by critics as one of the best Spanish violinists of all time, winning the prestigious Prix Grammophon, defined by the German Stuttgarter Zeitung "virtuous poet with Latin temperament". Maestro Palomares will be accompanied by pianist Corrado Greco, a musician present in the most important Italian concert institutions, in a virtuoso and passionate program devoted to Spanish music. A special ensemble for the second concert on Sunday 21 March. Playing at the Coro della Maddalena will be the flute quartet Giuseppe Nova Flute friends, which in addition to the Italian virtuoso, includes Soyoung Lee, soloist of the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, the Franco-Serbian flutist Milica Ostojic and Italian Salvatore Lombardi . A refined and sparkling program for “four magic flutes”, which will lead us from baroque atmospheres to jazz. The third program, again at the Coro della Maddalena, Sunday 28 March is devoted to Rossini and his famous string quartets, which represent a synthesis of the fantasy and the vitality of the master composer from Pesaro. The Gubbio Festival Ensemble, with violinists Olexander Semchuk, Katia Ghigi and cellist Victor Ceccanti, performs with Franco Petracchi, double bass, a renowned player who, just as the great masters of the past, has revolutionized the technique of his instrument to levels of other string instruments. There is no bass player who has received more attention and dedicated works by famous composers, and Franco Petracchi is also known to have founded, together with his colleagues Accardo, Giuranna and Filippini, the famous string players Academy "Walter Stauffer” in Cremona. The last Sunday on April 4th is dedicated to the feast of Easter and takes place at the Chiesa di San Giuseppe. The Ensemble Collegium Pro Musica, directed by Stephen Bagliano will take us on a journey to the Italian Baroque works inspired by Easter. The Collegium Pro Musica, founded in 1990 and specialized in the Baroque repertoire, follows the style and the praxis of the baroque period, using copies of the original instruments as well. Stefano Bagliano is internationally recognized among the main recorder virtuosos, and has held over 600 recitals as a soloist in prestigious festivals and institutions in USA, Asia, Israel and Europe. The concerts, are free, realized in collaboration with the Centro Culturale San Giuseppe and Go Wine. After each concert, 50 minutes, a glass of wine by a local producer will be offered, a convivial occasion to converse with music lovers and talk with the artists. A high-profile appointment, a striking encounter between the god of music and that of wine, happy prologue to what will be the seventh edition of the traditional Spring "Italy&USA Alba Music Festival” from May 20 to 30 and the summer edition from July 16 to August 1, a journey of great cultural venues in the territory, visiting 18 places of prestige, in a project produced together with Alba Tourist organizations (Ente and Consorzio Turistico).

The castle is mentioned in a bill of sale from 989, but the current structure is the work of the Solaro counts, lords of Govone from the 13th century.
It was rebuilt by Count Roberto Solaro and his grandson Ottavio Francesco Solaro, to whom the architect Guarino Guarini (1624-1683) dedicated the castle's reconstruction project. The building work was were carried on by their heirs, including Count Giuseppe Roberto Solaro, who was responsible for the involvement of architect Benedetto Alfieri, a disciple of Filippo Juvarra, in the design of the north façade. With the death of Count Amedeo Lodovico Solaro, who had no direct descendants, the castle and its properties passed to the State. It was later bought by Victor Amadeus III, King of Sardinia. After the defeat of the Piedmontese by French troops, the castle was appropriated by the French nation and in 1810 it was put up for auction and bought by Count Teobaldo Alfieri di Sostegno, who in 1816 handed it over to Prince Charles Felix, returning it to Savoy hands. In 1819 Charles Felix renovated the castle, modernizing it and turning it into his summer home. On his death in 1831 it passed to his widow Maria Cristina, who in turn left it to her nephew Ferdinand of Savoy, Duke of Genoa. In 1870 it was sold to the Tedeschi banking house in Turin. It was then acquired by the Ovazza Segre family who handed it over to the municipal government in 1897. The Royal Castle of Govone is one of the Piedmontese Savoy residences, which UNESCO has designated as World Heritage Sites. A series of careful restoration works are returning the castle to its original splendour, within the splendid setting of its vast park.
The central hall has a striking series of chiaroscuro frescoes by painter Luigi Vacca, depicting the myth of Niobe. The mythological paintings decorating the royal apartments are the work of Carlo Pagani and Andrea Piazza. Some of the ceilings, floors and doors feature elegant and sophisticated woodwork by the sculptor Bonzanigo. Four rooms are decorated with rare Chinese wallpaper, very much in fashion at the time. Following the tour, visitors can enjoy on their own the beautiful Italian-style gardens and the avenues of the 18th-century park, the work of the landscape architect Xavier Kurten. The rose garden has been re-established based on the gardener Delorenzi's 1850 catalogue, which describes a collection of antique roses in the Savoys' garden.

Protected by the government’s Cultural and Environmental Heritage Department, is an 18th-century historical villa. Its internal structure, the result of successive building works over time, has many different levels connected by stairs and small ramps.
The building was turned into an exhibition venue by the architects Corrado Levi, Alessandra Raso and Alberto Rolla using a design that respected the existing architectural plan. The restoration emphasized the link between past and present through the use of contemporary materials, like cement and galvanized iron, and offers great freedom for exhibition and event staging. The distribution of the rooms enhances the possibilities offered by the space, the atrium windows have been turned into functional passageways and the two courtyards have been linked. The exhibition centre was inaugurated in 1997, and since then the Guarene d’Alba venue has hosted exhibitions produced by the Foundation, presentations of books and films, debates, conferences and educational workshops. In 2006 the expansion of the exhibition area was completed, and the new space is used for exhibitions and educational activities as well as residences for curators from abroad, a project created in collaboration with the Edoardo Garrone Foundation in Genoa.
The Palazzo Re Rebaudengo is a historic 18th-century building whose interior rooms have finely decorated vaulted ceilings. The overall design is characterized by different levels from one room to the next, connected by stairs and small ramps. The internal courtyard and terrace open onto the Tanaro valley and the Langa hills. Next to the exhibition spaces is a 150-square-metre video room which hosts installations and special projects.

Memory, leitmotif of the 2010 Book Fair
What is memory for us today? How do we think of it, how do we use it? The choice of memory as the key theme of the 2010 Fair stems from the realisation of a paradox: right at the time when, thanks to new technologies, we have endless databanks to hand, so vast that they challenge our own imagination and management abilities, we have realised that our relationship with the past has become distracted, intermittent, almost annoying. While until Gutenberg learning by memorising was purely and simply what knowledge was, with the print revolution the ingenious classical techniques of memorisation, built on the image of a theatre, lost importance. In the 19th century, the political use of memory aimed to consolidate collective identity and for this reason created national festivals and heroes, such as Joan of Arc in France. “The invention of tradition” was born. Memory assumed a central role in psychoanalysis and biology, through the mapping of DNA. With Proust, memory becomes the primary driver of narration. Stronger than ever, the question of the delicate relationship between what to conserve and what to throw away has returned? These are some of the themes at the centre of meetings and debates at the 2010 Fair, a starting from the keynote lecture by Gianfranco Ravasi on the religions of memory (“Fate questo in memoria di me”), by Mario Botta on the sensitive dialectical relationship that architecture has with the past, and by film directors like Giuseppe Tornatore (Ba’aria) and the Frenchman Claude Lanzmann, the author of the monumental docu-film on the Shoah, and also the overwhelming autobiography Le lièvre de Patagonie, on the cinematographic and literary use of memory. The same theme is also the pivot of the dialogue between Pupi Avati and Andrea Vitali. The start will be the neurosciences. Edoardo Boncinelli, a biologist with excellent communication skills, will discuss with the neuro-surgeon Arnaldo Benini the hardware that manages the memorisation of our experience in our brain. The primary function that memory plays in psychoanalysis will be discussed by the Freudian Roberto Speziale Bagliacca and the Jungian Luigi Zoja. Luciano Canfora dedicates a keynote lecture to the invention of memory in the era of Pericles, while Valerio M. Manfredi reconstructs the fabulous weft of legends and myths that has been crafted around the tomb of Alexander the Great. Umberto Eco and the philosopher Maurizio Ferraris, with the semiologist Patrizia Violi, talk of “the delirium of listing”, the vortex of the cataloguing of what exists, with which humanity attempts to exorcise the damage of time and the limits of its own mnemonic abilities, but also of the need for oblivion. The meeting is entitled The future of memory. In what way can the signs of memory invigorate an “educational challenge” that is needed more than ever today, but also increasingly difficult? This is the theme of the keynote lecture by Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, President of the Conferenza Episcopale Italiana. Primo Levi had already recalled that personal memory should be subject to stringent verification, because it tends to modify, embellish, and constantly “rewrite” itself. A talk by the British Italianist Robert Gordon, one of the most acute scholars of Levi, in conversation with Domenico Scarpa is dedicated to the author and his reflections on chance and luck in a lager. The relationship between history and memory is the subject of the keynote lecture by Giovanni De Luna. A somewhat similar journey, from documents to literary re-invention, is what will be illustrated by two masters of the Italian historical novel, Alessandro Barbero and Melania Mazzucco. But it is in the 20th century that tragedies that cannot be ignored are concentrated. Thus the Shoah, which also brings with it the difficulty of saying the unsayable (the books by Enrico Donaggio, Diego Guzzi and Carlo de Matteis, and by Helga Schneider). Or the dangerous relations between racial culture and literary culture in 20th century Italy (the Polish historian Bronislaw Backo, Luciano Canfora and Carlo Ossola discuss this). While Francesco Cataluccio follows the phantoms of the great central European cultures, destroyed first by the Nazis and then by Stalinism.

Mule Race
In contempt of the noble one run with horses in Asti, the villagers claim to be able to trace its origins at least as far back as the 1700s.
The traditional day of the race is that of Pentecost: on this day the inhabitants of the different quarters of the village cheer enthusiastically and shout loudly when their mule reaches the finishing line

Reenactment of the siege and conquest of the castle Engraved by Guglielmo IX Palaeologus Marquis of Monferrato on July 24, 1514
The story tells of the dispute between the Marquis of Monferrato and the small independent Marquis of Incisa. The Marquis of Incisa was wide, his possessions went from Vasto to Carentino and included the castles of Rocchetta Tanaro, Scarampi Montaldo, Fontanile, Mombaruzzo, and Ricaldone. For this reason, the powerful Marquess of Montferrat Guglielmo IX was interested in annexing these territories and thus control the Belbo Valley. When, in April 1500, Ludovico Sforza 'il Moro' was taken prisoner by the French, Marquis Oddone Incisa loses her pimp and turns to the Duke of Savoy Carlo II. The secret document notarized in Thonon castle, the Duke of Savoy confirms the investiture to Oddone and promises his help. The Marquis of Montferrat, knowing the agreement, besieges Incisa conquering it in July 24, 1514. Oddone and his son Badone were sentenced to death. For the occasion, "the Villa" is transformed into a medieval village with several eateries; in every hall you can taste foods and wines of Piedmont. The event takes place in Borgo Villa occupies the entire historic center is therefore denied access to car; you can park in Ghiare village or at the station, where there is a free shuttle from 19 o'clock at night

Odo within the defensive walls is believed impregnable and organize banquets for the districts of Borgo Villa to sap the hearts of the besiegers camped at the Convent of the Carmelites.
Entertainment continues with swordplay by groups: Fellowship of the Virgin (NO), Flos et Leo (AL) and dancing by the ladies of the Society Ordo Temporis (AL). Theatrical performance by storyteller of Claudio and Consuelo. Animations touring with the Theatre of Acerbi.

Captains Gian Bernardino and Piergiorgio De Giorgis lead the assault on the Castle of Incisa. Captain of the Guards of Borgo Villa Oddone betrays and hands it over to Gugliemo IX of Montferrat.
- 23:45 pm - Trial of Oddone Incisa.
Guglielmo IX staged a trial against Oddone and his eldest Badone. With the help of Alberto and Secundus of Incisa, released from prison where Oddone had them locked up, you decreed their death sentence.

Donkey Race
Despite its age - it is 50 years old now - Donkey Race is looking younger and younger. The competition began for fun but soon became a moment of rivalry among Alba districts - the unchanged rivalry that today nourishes a renewed competitive spirit for victory. Donkey Race started for fun to mock Asti, the town that in 1275, on St. Lawrence’s day, patron of Alba, conquered Alba and nearly destroyed it. In order to minimize and to play down the 1275 defeat, Alba decided to mock Asti by creating its own Palio not as an horse race – like Palio in Asti – but as a donkey race. Fun is Palio unique reason – decades of victories and defeats have passed by, still vivid as it had happened today. Some districts have won lots of competitions, others less. Though each year each district strongly want to deserve victory. Palio is on the first Sunday in October – a goliardic moment, crowded with tourists. Palio awards a parade prize as well – over a thousand figurants (noblewomen, knights, soldiers, common people and peasants) in a medieval parade along the historical centre streets surrounded by banners and flags, and accompanied by trumpets and drums to introduce the competition. Who will win? Palio takes place in Piazza Osvaldo Cagnasso at 4:30 p.m. and it is composed of two heats and a final trial. The one-thousand-figurant medieval parade starts at 2:30 p.m. and takes place along the coloured historical streets, decked out in the town district colours. At 10:00 in the morning another rite takes place: town district representatives and jockeys meet in piazza Risorgimento for the assignment of donkeys participating to the competition. Awaiting for the donkey race, another competition will take place - Chicken Race, a race organized by the local tourist board from Sanfrè.

The Markets
A variety of markets will take place during the Fair. A long-lasting tradition accompanying the Truffle Fair – its popular side that has recently developed into a rich phantasmagoria of products for all tastes and for expert palates. Do not miss the stands in the historical centre. Visitors may go shopping around the typical and colourful market, among hundreds of sellers and thousands of curios to be found under the market umbrellas and on the overcrowded counters in the streets and squares in Alba, in Piave and Langhe villages, on Sundays, in October. And do not miss «La Natura in piazza» (“Nature on Show”) in piazza Elvio Pertinace – a shot of colours and bygone flavours where visitors can buy certified “green” products and products from organic agriculture. It represents a tradition that refers to the most ancient Langa and Roero and that is linked with rural wisdom and benevolent, harmless past-days witches’ sorcery.
